Memorial Day weekend is the kickoff for tubing season in Central Texas. The rivers are warm, the weather is hot, the outfitters are fully staffed, and everyone is ready to start summer the right way. If you've been waiting all winter and spring to get back on the river, this is your weekend.
The Unofficial Start of Summer
While technically you can tube year-round on Texas's spring-fed rivers (the water is always 72°F), Memorial Day is when the energy shifts. Outfitters go to full summer schedules with maximum shuttle runs. The riverbanks come alive with groups, families, and first-timers. It's the weekend that says: summer is here.
There's something special about being among the first big wave of floaters for the season. The rivers are clean, the grass on the banks is green, and the summer crowd hasn't worn down the vibe yet. Memorial Day floaters get the best-conditioned rivers of the season.
Late May Weather
Memorial Day weekend weather in Central Texas is nearly perfect for river tubing:
- Air temps: 85–95°F. Warm enough that you want to be in the water, but not the brutal 100°F+ of July.
- Water temps: 72°F. Same as always — spring-fed and perfect.
- Long daylight hours. Sunset around 8:30 PM means you can start a float late morning and still have plenty of evening left.
- Occasional May storms. Late May can bring afternoon thunderstorms. They usually pass quickly, but check weather conditions the morning of your trip.
When to Book
Memorial Day is the third-busiest weekend of the tubing season (behind July 4th and Labor Day). Here's what you need to know:
- Book 2–3 weeks ahead for Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend
- Friday and Monday are easier to book and less crowded
- Group discounts available at 10+ people
- Pricing: $35–$55/person (holiday weekend rates)
Crowd Expectations
Memorial Day is busy, but it's a more manageable busy than July 4th. The rivers are lively and social without being sardine-packed. Saturday is the busiest day of the weekend, with Sunday close behind. Friday and Monday are noticeably calmer — if you want the holiday vibe with smaller crowds, those are your best bets.
For the most relaxed experience, consider a weekday float the week before or after Memorial Day. Same great weather, a fraction of the crowd.
Which River to Choose
- San Marcos River — Best for groups, closest to Austin, BYOB on Martindale section, 3–4 hour float.
- Comal River — Best for families and shorter floats (2–3 hours). Tube chute is a hit with all ages.
- Guadalupe River — Scenic loop float, great for a change of pace if you've done San Marcos before.
What to Bring
Memorial Day is your first real sun exposure of the season. Don't underestimate it:
- SPF 50+ sunscreen — your winter skin will burn fast
- Water, water, water — at least two bottles per person
- Canned drinks — BYOB, no glass
- Water shoes — not flip-flops
- Dry clothes — for the ride home
