Birthday Float Trips — Celebrate on the River

The best birthday party in Austin doesn't have walls. Celebrate with a float trip your crew will never forget.

    Last Updated: February 2026

There are two types of birthday people in Austin: the ones who book a dinner reservation, and the ones who book a river float. Be the second type. Whether you're turning 25 or 50, celebrating with your friends or your kids, a birthday float trip on a Central Texas river is hands-down the most fun, most memorable, and most affordable way to celebrate. No venue rental, no decorating a room, no stress. Just tubes, sunshine, cold drinks, and the people you love.

    Adult Birthday Floats

An adult birthday float is basically the best party you've ever thrown — with none of the planning headaches. Here's why it works so well:

    • BYOB. Load up your floating cooler with beer, seltzers, ranch water, or whatever you're into. No bar tab, no bottle service, no $15 cocktails.
    • Group pricing. At $25–$55 per person (all-inclusive with shuttle, tubes, and cooler tubes), it's cheaper than a dinner out — and infinitely more fun.
    • Everyone can come. Groups of 5–40+ are no problem. The more the merrier. River tubing scales perfectly for any party size.
    • No cleanup. Seriously. You show up, you float, you go home. We handle everything else.

We recommend the San Marcos River for adult birthday floats — it's the closest to Austin, has the best party atmosphere, and the 3–4 hour float is the perfect length for a celebration. Check river rules for BYOB policies on your chosen river.

    Kid-Friendly Birthday Floats

River tubing is an amazing birthday activity for kids — if you pick the right river and plan ahead. Here's what to know:

Best River for Kids: The Comal

The Comal River in New Braunfels is our top pick for kid birthday parties. It's the shortest float (2.5–3 hours — perfect attention span for kids), the shallowest and most gentle river, has the famous tube chute (a concrete slide that kids absolutely love), and the put-in is at Landa Park, which has playgrounds, picnic tables, and grassy areas perfect for post-float cake and presents.

    • Age minimums: Comal River requires age 5+ (city ordinance). San Marcos recommends 6+. No exceptions.
    • Life jackets: Required by Texas law for all children under 13. Free at every outfitter.
    • Adult-to-kid ratio: We recommend at least 1 adult per 2–3 kids. An adult should be in a tube next to each child, not across the river.
    • Sunscreen: Kids burn fast. Apply SPF 50+ before departure, bring the bottle to reapply, and consider rash guards for extended sun protection.

    Birthday Party Planning Tips

    • Save the cake for after. Seriously. Cake + river + 95°F heat = disaster. Do cake and presents at a restaurant, park, or back at the house after the float. Cupcakes in a sealed container are the only river-safe option.
    • Decorations that survive. Skip the paper streamers. Instead: a birthday sash for the birthday person, a waterproof "Happy Birthday" banner for a photo op at the put-in, matching party hats (the cheap kind you don't mind losing), and a birthday crown that clips to a hat.
    • Coordinate your group. Create a group text or WhatsApp. Share the packing list (What to Bring), the pickup time and location, and any costume/theme coordination.
    • Book early for weekends. Birthday floats on Saturdays fill up fast, especially May through August. Book 2–3 weeks ahead.
    • Consider a weekday float. If your schedule allows, weekday floats mean fewer crowds, lower prices, and a more relaxed vibe. Perfect for kid parties during summer break.

    Post-Float Celebration Spots

The float is the main event, but the celebration doesn't have to end there. Here are our favorite post-float birthday spots:

    🎂 For Kid Parties

    • Landa Park (New Braunfels) — right at the Comal River put-in. Picnic tables, playground, and a spring-fed pool. Bring the cake here.
    • Peter Pan Mini-Golf (Austin) — a classic Austin institution. Mini-golf + ice cream = kid birthday perfection.
    • Amy's Ice Creams — multiple Austin locations. The "crush'n" flavors are a hit with every age.

    🍻 For Adult Parties

    • Jester King Brewery — farmhouse brewery on a sprawling ranch west of Austin. Perfect for large groups.
    • Pinthouse Pizza — award-winning beer + great pizza. Casual, group-friendly, affordable.
    • Rainey Street — bar hop through converted bungalows. Multiple patios, food trucks, live music. Great for a birthday crawl.
    • Top Golf — if the birthday crew still has energy. Drinks, games, and climate-controlled bays.
